Super FamiComplete #67: Super Scope 6 (Redux)

Title: Super Scope 6

Release Date: February 1996

Developer: Intelligent Systems

Publisher: Nintendo

Here we have another game which exists only to showcase a new technology. While the NES had its "Zapper," the SNES had its "Super Scope," a light gun that can be used to play gun gallery games on old CRT TVs.  Light gun games were a pretty neat gimmick (get ready for a gross oversimplification of light gun technology); basically they made a gun that would shoot a beam of light at the tv screen, which would be picked up by the cathode ray tubes behind the television screen. The tubes would sense the change in brightness, and indicate back to the system where the rays from the gun were focusing. All of this happened very quickly and with very little delay.

This means, of course, that these style of games do not work on modern tvs, as they do not utilize cathode ray tubes. Sadly, I got rid of my old CRT and can't play this game without a significant investment, nor do I even own a Super Scope. I have been trying to play with an emulator *gasp*, but so far I haven't figured out how to get the mouse to function as the light gun. So just be forewarned, my impressions of this game are based solely off of youtube videos, and not much else.

This game was developed by Intelligent Systems. If that sounds familiar, that is because they are the company that eventually developed the Paper Mario series for Nintendo.

Gameplay
Unlike the zapper, which is modeled after a pistol, the Super Scope looks more like a shoulder cannon or an RPG. You cradle it against your shoulder and the buttons are down on the main barrel and trigger.

Now Super Scope 6 is a showcase of six light gun gallery games made to test out this attachment, in a very similar way that Duck Hunt and Skeet Shoot were a game made to showcase the zapper.

The games are pretty simple. You have a Tetris game that you play by shooting the blocks, a Columns like game, and a whack-a-mole game called Mole Patrol. There are also a set of three games each having to do with fighting off an enemy force. "Intercept" is a game where you shoot down missiles, "Engage" is a game where you shoot down enemy planes and missiles, and "Confront" is a game where you attack an invasion fleet of ships.

Music
Yes this game does have some music!

Final Verdict
Overall, this series of games looks nice if a bit forgettable. Nowhere near as charming as something like Duck Hunt, but also not as weird as the later Yoshi's Safari. There would be other titles, down the line, like BattleClash, that utilize the Super Scope as a key part of their gameplay. Overall, though, this is an accessory that had limited appeal and shelf life amongst gamers of this generation.
